  • Haloperidol is an antipsychotic that blocks dopamine D2 receptors in the brain
indications
  • Treatment of severe agitation/aggression associated with psychiatric disorders (eg, schizophrenia), substance intoxication, or other causes.

IV, IM: 2 to 10 mg; repeat dose every ≥ 15 minutes until acute symptoms are controlled

adverse reactions
  • Extrapyramidal Symptoms
    • Acute dystonia (involuntary muscle contractions that cause slow repetitive movements or abnormal postures)
    • Drug-induced parkinsonism (rigidity, tremors, and slowness of movement)
    • Akathisia (inability to remain still)
    • Tardive dyskinesia (causes repetitive, involuntary facial movements, such as grimacing and eye blinking)
  • Hematologic abnormalities
    • Leukopenia (low white blood cells)
    • Neutropenia (now neutrophil blood cells)
    • Thrombocytopenia (low platelets)
  • Hyperprolactinemia
    • Higher-than-normal levels of prolactin in your blood causing infertility, decreased sex drive, and bone loss in both sexes
  • Neuroleptic malignant syndrome
    • Life-threatening neurological disorder. Symptoms include: high fever, sweating, irregular or fast heartbeat, high or low blood pressure.
  • QTc prolongation
    • Haloperidol has been associated with a prolonged QT interval on ECG, torsades de pointes
